Plans for a multi-million dollar firing range in the city of Jonesboro will benefit more than just the police department.
The city aims to open the range up to the public a few days a week as well.
The proposed site, located along Dan Avenue, was rezoned Tuesday night in the city council meeting.
Jonesboro Police Chief Rick Elliott said the sooner they get this thing opened the better it will be for police and the public.
"We want the public to shoot in a safe and controlled environment," Chief Elliott said. "A lot of times, people just go out to ditch banks and somebody's field and shoot and every now and then, you'll get stray rounds hitting people's houses, cars and things like that."
Plans for the range also include space designated for trap shooting.
Now, work to fund the project begins.
Chief Elliott told Region 8 News he hopes to have the berm built by this time next year.
A 3,600 square foot building is expected to be built in 2017. The building will be used for training but can also be used for concealed carry license classes.
