Lyon College opens new dorms for students

BATESVILLE, AR (KAIT) -

Lyon College welcomes two new residence halls to campus.

According to College President Donald Weatherman, students needed more housing.

Weatherman said enrollment for this year is at 715, which is a big increase from 413 in the 2008-2009 school year.

These two dorms will house 200 students in total.

“They will accommodate approximately 100 students each,” Weatherman said. “It is hard to be a residential liberal arts college if you don't have places for students to put their heads."

The Wilson Hall, donated by Perry Wilson’s family in honor of his father, will be an all-female dorm. While Whiteside Hall, donated in honor of Charlie Whiteside, will be an all-male dorm.

Weatherman said these dorms would not have been possible without support from donors.

The new buildings sit on either side of the current Young Hall.

Wilson Hall was open at the beginning of this year and Whitehouse Hall opened to residents in mid-October.

Vice President of Student Life and Dean of Students Patrick Mulick said the students love the new dorms.

"They are loving the spaces. They are very open and were designed in a way to pull students out of their rooms and into the common areas," Mulick said.

The college held a ribbon cutting Thursday to officially open the two halls and thank the donors.

Students, faculty, donors and alum were all present during the ceremony.
