NEWARK, AR (KAIT) -

A student at the Cedar Ridge School District was cited and suspended for having a weapon on school property Tuesday.

According to the Independence County Sheriff’s Department, dean of students Bill Crotts contacted authorities in reference to a student possibly having a knife at school.

Once deputies arrived, they called the student into the hallway. The student pulled an open, 8-and-a-half inch butterfly knife from his front pocket. According to the report, the knife was fixed in the open position with electrical tape.

The report states that the student gave no reasonable explanation for having the knife other than “he had grown up in a bad neighborhood" and was bullied at school.

The student was cited, taken to his home and released to his guardian. The student was suspended for ten days.
