FORREST CITY, AR (KAIT) -

Prosecutors have charged a Forrest City woman with murder in an apartment fire that claimed another woman’s life.

Early on the morning of Oct. 16, firefighters were called to the 900-block of Mann Street.

After dousing the flames, investigators found Ruth Jones face down inside the doorway of her apartment.

She was taken to Regional One Medical Center in Memphis where she died of her injuries 8 days later.

At the time of the fire, officers arrested and charged 57-year-old Vernice Johnson. She was later released from the St. Francis County Jail after posting $30,000 bond.

On Oct. 25, charges against Johnson were amended and a warrant was issued for Johnson’s arrest.

According to the Forrest City Police Department’s Facebook page, Johnson turned herself into the county jail on Tuesday, Oct. 27.

Johnson is now charged with arson, first-degree murder, second-degree battery and first-degree criminal mischief.

She is being held in lieu of $150,000 bond. She is scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday, Oct. 28, to face arraignment.
