Injured Jonesboro police officer thanks community for support

JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - A Jonesboro police officer struck by a car Monday night took to Facebook Tuesday to thank the bystanders who stopped to help.

A vehicle hit Officer Weston Gates Monday night as he crossed the street to investigate an accident at the intersection of Caraway Road and Glenn Place.

Gates, who remains at St. Bernards Medical Center in stable condition, said bystanders at the scene of the incident helped him while he waited for medical help.

One person spoke to him while two others held an umbrella and a jacket over him to keep away the rain.

"These bystanders also helped me secure my head and neck and got my radio and gear together to call for help," Gates said.

Gates thanked the community for the prayers and well wishes sent his way, calling the outpouring of love "extremely humbling" and "overwhelming."

He also asked for prayers for the driver of the car that hit him saying, "Accidents sometimes happen to good people."
