Legislators Hope to Complete Session by April 15

MARCH 7, 2005 - Posted at 7:21 a.m. CST

LITTLE ROCK, AR - Legislative leaders say they have a goal of completing the current session by April 15.  Lawmakers have worked to narrow the focus on repairing school facilities to help get a bill through both houses.

House Speaker Bill Stovall and Senate President Pro Tem Jim Argue want to develop a ten-year plan to finance a costly overhaul of public school buildings and equipment.

The House Rules Committee has approved a resolution to extend the session to April 15, and the measure is expected to pass through the House and Senate by Thursday, the 60th day of the session and the often-surpassed constitutional deadline.

The move abandons what had been the Legislature's practice of extending sessions incrementally, by days or by weeks, until its work is finished.
