Marked Tree residents may see new jobs from rice facility

MARKED TREE (KAIT) - A new industry could bring jobs to Marked Tree.

According to Mayor Mary Ann Arnold, the Erwin Keith Inc. rice facility is under construction on Old Highway 308.

The new facility will use a rail spur originally built for West Memphis-based Awesome Products.

Awesome Products remains in the area where the rice facility will stand, but the company never used the spur rail.

Mayor Arnold said Monday that she did not know how many jobs the facility would bring, but it should grow a broader tax base due to more jobs.

Sandy Teague, who lives in Marked Tree, said this allows room for growth in the community.

"Anytime that you have an operation as big as that operation is going to be, you know and you can see by looking at it that it's not a one-man show," Teague said. "So, yes it's going to be bringing jobs into Marked Tree and we're very excited."

Teague said having additional jobs are especially important in a rural town like Marked Tree.

"Anytime we have a chance to bring an industry or a business into Marked Tree, that is what we want to do," Teague said. "We want jobs."

Arnold did not know when the rice facility would be complete.
