JONESBORO, AR - The office of Jonesboro Mayor Doug Formon and the Northeast Arkansas Transit Authority (NEAT) will work to form a strategic task force to try and find a viable solution to public transit in Jonesboro and Craighead County.

That agreement came out of this afternoon's meeting of the Transit Authority's strategic planning subcommittee.  According to a news release from the Mayor's office, the task force might consist of NEAT board members, community leaders, and private citizens. The group is then expected to make recommendations to Formon and the NEAT board.

According to the news release, possible task force recommendations include...

-Dissolution of the NEAT board, as a whole, and the creation of a new managing authority under the direction of the Mayor's office.

-Limiting the public transit routes solely within designated areas in the city of Jonesboro.

-Bringing developmental ideas to promote this program to those groups in Jonesboro who could benefit from a public transit system.

"I met with some members of the NEAT board and I felt we needed a fresh, new approach.  The board wanted my office to bring those new ideas to them," said Formon.  "My office, the NEAT board and the city government of Jonesboro have a lot of work ahead of us with this project.  However, I am confident by working together this will be a successful program for all the citizens of Jonesboro.
