Police tip off residents to new crime-fighting features

WYNNE, AR (KAIT) - Advancements in technology are helping a Region 8 police department better serve its citizens.

Recently, the Wynne Police Department added a link to their website where people can anonymously submit a crime tip.

"People are usually more willing to provide tips when they're not face-to-face with an officer," Lieutenant Mike Smith said.

Smith said the department is getting more "social."

By using Facebook, he says residents are more aware of what is going on in their community.

A resident captured a surveillance picture and posted it to the department's Facebook page.

One viewer saw the picture and anonymously gave a tip through the new website link, Smith said.

That tip led to an arrest.

Smith said the interaction with the community has helped tremendously.

“Previously we would have to have officers actually going out and canvassing neighborhoods, showing pictures and it takes a lot of man-hours to do that, especially with as many crimes as we have,” Smith said. “Now, we can post this online and we've given this information electronically to thousands of people. We're enlisting the help of the community.”
