PARAGOULD, AR (KAIT) - Several Paragould residents have expressed concern about a strange odor in the air, but it is not harmful.
A company has been contracted to burn off the remaining vapor in old tanks before they are shipped to the scrap yard in Jonesboro.
Fire Chief Kevin Lang said that what people are smelling isn't actually gas because that's already been burned off.
"Propane itself is colorless and odorless," Lang said. "So, they introduce this odor in it, which is mercaptan. That's the smell that you smell when someone says I smell gas. Well, they're actually smelling mercaptan."
Lang said the residual gas and the mercaptan being burnt off will not harm residents, plants or animals.
He said the company should be done cleaning the tanks by Friday.
