BAXTER COUNTY, AR (KAIT) -

The Baxter County Sheriff’s Office and Arkansas State Police continue investigating a house and a vehicle fire over the weekend that are both believed to be arson.

An elderly couple that lives in the home that was burnt down is also missing.

Sheriff John Montgomery said Monday that investigators are on scene. Mechanical equipment is being used to sift through debris and 3 ASP arson investigators have arrived to assist.

An Arkansas State Police trooper was flagged down by a driver around 7:35 p.m. Saturday and told that a house was on fire on Baxter County Road 508.

The Midway Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched as the trooper went to investigate the fire. The house was heavily involved when the crews arrived.

According to a news release from the sheriff’s department, one vehicle belonging to the couple was there but their second vehicle was missing.

The next morning, around 8:30 a.m., a sheriff’s deputy found a vehicle in a field in a “rather remote area” on Baxter County Road 1, near the area of Bruce Creek.

Montgomery states investigators have confirmed that was the vehicle missing from the CR 508 residence via vehicle identification number.

The sheriff's office is asking anyone with information about either arson, or those who might have seen a pearl white 2015 GMC Sierra with a fiberglass bed cover (similar to stock photo) involved in this incident call 870-425-7000. Anonymous tips can be called in to 870-424-4363.

Authorities have contacted relatives of the missing couple and a full investigation is underway to try and determine what has happened to them.

A news conference will be held at 3 p.m. to provide more information about the investigation.
