Region 8 mayor pushes for road to connect with bypass

MONETTE, AR (KAIT) -

The city of Monette wants to link a street to a new bypass to make it easier for drivers.

The Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department is constructing a bypass on Highway 18 on the north side of town.

It has already closed off Maple Street, which would have served as a connector.

That left residents just one way to get on the highway, which would be further for them to drive.

Mayor Jerry “Chubbs” Qualls now wants to connect Industrial Street to the bypass.

However, the state believes having too many side roads leading to the bypass could cause more accidents.

“Talking to them, we hope we can work it out and have access to that and still be safe,” Qualls said.

Currently, Industrial Street is not fully paved. Qualls would like to complete that once he knows more from the state.

“It will probably benefit us more than it’ll hurt us,” he said.
