Sheriff's department helps American Cancer Society

INDEPENDENCE COUNTY, AR (KAIT) - Several Independence County sheriff's deputies are growing facial hair for a good cause.

The department is participating in No-Shave November.

Normally deputies are not allowed to have facial hair, but Sheriff Steve Jeffery is allowing it this month.

To grow a beard or mustache, Jeffery asks they make a $20 donation to the American Cancer Society.

Jeffery said he is happy to have the department support cancer awareness and research.

"I think it is a good cause. I am a cancer survivor myself," Jeffery said. "When a deputy told me about this I said 'Absolutely, let's get on board.' And so we did."

Several deputies in the department have already started growing breads and mustaches.
