JONESBORO, AR (A-STATE) – The Arkansas State women's basketball team picked up a 79-65 exhibition victory over Harding Tuesday night at the Convocation Center in its final tune-up for the 2015-16 season.
The Red Wolves completed their preseason schedule with a 2-0 exhibition record, also defeating Henderson State on Nov. 3 by a 91-63 score. With tonight's win, the A-State improved its exhibition record 22-0 since the 2005-06 season and has now won 16 of its last 19 preseason contests by a double-digit margin.
Four players scoring in double figures, including senior guard Aundrea Gamble with a game-high 21 points, led Arkansas State. Senior guard Khadija Brown-Haywood collected a double-double with 12 points and a game-high 19 rebounds, while senior guards Brittney Gill and Jessica Flanery added 13 and 11 points, respectively, for the Red Wolves.
"I am really on the fence about this game," A-State head coach Brian Boyer said. "A lot of good stuff took place, but it also seemed like it was followed by a lot of bad stuff too. You just have to move on from this one and get ready for the regular season."
A-State fell behind 21-18 after the first period and held just a 30-29 lead with 5:59 left in the second, but outscored Harding 20-7 the remainder of the half to take a 50-36 advantage into the break. The late run saw six different Arkansas State players score and was capped by a Flanery three-pointer with 29 seconds left before halftime.
The Red Wolves scored 12 of the first 14 points in the third period and saw their lead swell to 66-40 after a little over seven minutes of action. They maintained at least a 20 point lead throughout most of the remainder of the contest, although Hardin was able to close the final margin to 14 points by closing with an 8-0 run.
Nine of the twelve players used by A-State saw at least 10 minutes of time on the court and 11 of them scored. The Red Wolves took advantage of their opportunities around the basket, scoring 50 of their 79 points in the paint and outrebounding Harding 51-32. A-State finished the contest with a .478 shooting percentage in comparison to Harding's .379.
Senior forward Amanda Lawson dished out a team-high four assists for A-State, and Brown-Haywood had three assists and two steals to go along with her double-double. Harding was led by three players reaching double digits in the scoring column, including A'Ndrea Haney with a team-high 16 points.
Arkansas State will begin the regular season with back-to-back road games, starting with a Nov. 14 matchup against Tennessee Tech on Saturday at 5:30 p.m.Season tickets for A-State's 2015-16 campaign are on sale at the A-State Ticket Office, located at the Convocation Center's lower red entrance.
