SULPHUR ROCK, AR (KAIT) -

A junior high student is recovering after a gun went off in a school parking lot.

The incident happened in the campus parking lot of the Sulphur Rock Magnet school in Sulphur Rock early Wednesday morning before school, according to the Batesville School District.

The two students were waiting in the parking lot to catch a bus to the high school.

According to Independence County Sheriff Steve Jeffery, one student had a 380 semi-automatic handgun that he was showing to the other.

The weapon reportedly discharged in the vehicle and hit the student in the leg.

Superintendent Gary Anderson said it was an unfortunate accident.

"I've been assured there was no malicious intent at all," Anderson said. It was strictly accidental.

The student was taken to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The Independence County Sheriff's Office is still investigating but the shooting appears to be accidental.
