Region 8 county updates emergency plan

OSCEOLA, AR (KAIT) -

With an updated emergency plan in place, some Region 8 school districts could possibly get safe rooms.

Mississippi County has declared an adoption for an all-hazard mitigation plan with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

Joseph Richmond, the county’s emergency manager coordinator, says the update will allow eligibility for FEMA funding.

One plan could include a safe room in some local schools, Richmond said.

Richmond said some districts have reached out about funding for safe rooms.

However, just because the county is eligible for funding does not mean it is immediately available.

“This plan just gives them a risk assessment to know what disaster and what events will affect their area and give them an idea of what they could do if funding became available,” Richmond said.

If money allows, safe rooms would be one priority the county would consider funding, according to Richmond.
