Students using social media to promote holiday acts of kindness

JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) -

One school district is teaching students to use social media in a positive way while promoting holiday kindness.

Students at the Valley View School District will participate in random acts of kindness by giving back to the community.

They are making Christmas cards for local nursing homes, sending treat bags to soldiers, and planning surprises for faculty.

Sara Osment, junior high assistant principal, said they will use the hashtag VVRACKD15, which stands for Valley View Random Acts of Kindness, when they post stories and pictures on Facebook and Twitter.

Osment believes the hashtag will help promote positive stories online.

She explained that the students are also learning how to give intentionally by participating.

“It doesn't always cost money,” Osment said. “It could be something as saying three nice things to the person standing behind you in the cafeteria line, or sending somebody a text message telling them thank you.”

Osment says the district is still planning ways students can serve the community.

Students will start posting their stories on Dec. 1.
