Woman shoots her own dog after it bites neighbor

JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) -

A Jonesboro woman received multiple citations for shooting her own dog after police say it bit a 9-year-old girl.

Matt Gragg, a Jonesboro Animal Control officer, said the girl was sitting on her front porch waiting to go to school when the yellow Labrador Retriever bit her on the finger.

It happened at the 1500 block of Church Street Tuesday morning.

After the dog bit the girl, the owner shot the dog in the mouth and killed it.

Laquitta Marsh lives in the surrounding area.

Marsh said her two kids walk down Church Street often.

After hearing about the dog bite so close to home, she is rethinking about letting her kids walk the streets.

I'll probably start keeping them home, Marsh said. I know there's not one in my yard.

Gragg said the bite was minor and the owner should not have killed the dog.

The woman was cited with animal cruelty, a dog running loose, and no rabies tag, according to Gragg.

She will appear in court on Dec. 3.
