Angel Tree collects Christmas gifts for about 500 kids

INDEPENDENCE COUNTY, AR (KAIT) - United Way of North Central Arkansas is collecting Christmas gifts for almost 500 kids through the Angel Tree Program.

Collections for the program started Tuesday and will go until Dec. 7.

The Department of Human Services provides the names of the kids to United Way.

People in Independence County can pick out a name from an Angel Tree list at several locations including the main branches of Centennial Bank, Citizens Bank, First Community Bank, Southern Bank, Merchants and Planters Bank and Anytime Fitness.

Once all the gifts are collected, United Way will sort them at the Independence County fairgrounds and then distribute them to the kids.

Allison Phelps, United Way of North Central Arkansas executive director, said the Angel Tree is a great way to give back to the community during the holidays.

"The fact that this program makes sure that all the kids in Independence County are able to have a good Christmas is really special," Phelps said.

She also said people can give monetary donations, or volunteer their help.

If you are interested in volunteering, you can call their office at (870) 793-5991.
