Volunteers prepare to serve thousands at annual Thanksgiving meal

JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) -

Several Region 8 residents spent Wednesday working to make Thanksgiving a happy event for those less fortunate.

Volunteers began preparing for Thursday’s Community Thanksgiving Meal at St. Bernards Auditorium, 505 E. Washington Ave. in Jonesboro.

Event organizers expect to feed 2,000 people.

That requires a lot of turkey, dressing, mashed potatoes and desserts.

Richard Carvell has donated his time and kitchen skills to the event for the last 5 years.

He says it is one of the most rewarding things he has ever done.

“It probably means more to me and those who volunteer than it does to those who come and participate in the meal by actually eating," Carvell said. "It’s our way of giving back to the community. I’m very thank and I think everyone who participates is very thankful.”

The meal will start at 10:30 a.m.

Those who are unable to make it to the auditorium can have a meal delivered within city limits by calling 336-0555 between 8 and 11 a.m.
