TRUMANN, AR (KAIT) - A Region 8 town has a safer historic community center, after the city made major priority repairs.
The Trumann Community Center received a $20,000 grant from the Heritage Foundation to repair the electrical system and the roof, according to Mayor Barbara Lewallen.
Lewallen said the electrical system was not in good shape and there were multiple leaks in the ceiling.
She said the electrical system could have started a possible fire.
If the city had lost the building, she said they would have lost more than just a popular meeting place.
"It's such an iconic building and it represents so much to the people that's lived here for years," Lewallen said.
The building needs more repairs, but those two were priorities and made a big difference by making the building safer.
