NEWPORT, AR (KAIT) -

The Newport Police Department is investigating a suspicious device found under a car Friday afternoon.

Newport officers responded to the Unity Health-Harris Medical Center, 1205 McLain Street, around 4 p.m. in reference to a suspicious item being found lying on the ground under a vehicle.

It was in the west parking lot.

When officers arrived, they found the device which appeared to be a small, green propane bottle with a black box attached. There was a wire coming from the black box into the bottle.

The Arkansas State Police Bomb Squad responded to the scene to examine the device.

They discovered it was a “crudely constructed, hoax device that had no possibility of exploding or causing harm,” according to a press release from the Newport Police Department.

The device was dismantled by the bomb squad and collected for forensic analysis.

The investigation into where the device came from is ongoing.
