BATESVILLE, AR (KAIT) - A Region 8 law enforcement team will offer a free active shooter class beginning in January.
The Law Enforcement Community Relations Team with the Batesville Police Department and the Independence County Sheriff's Department are encouraging the community to get involved in the upcoming program, according to team member Scott Lancaster and Batesville Police Chief Alan Cockrill.
Lancaster said this type of training can be life-saving.
Chief Cockrill said police officers are not the first responders, the people are.
He said knowing exactly what to do is important to increase chances of survival.
"We have excelled in the training of our citizens on what to do in the event of an active shooter," Chief Cockrill said. "It's not necessarily what our response would be but what we expect their response to be."
The team will travel to local churches, schools, and businesses to hold the classes.
Anyone who is interested in booking a class can call the Batesville Police Department at (870) 569-8111 or the Independence County Sheriff's Department at (870) 793-8838.
