JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - Some residents and business owners say a harmless gas is causing a stink in downtown Jonesboro.
Hailey Knight, the executive director of the Downtown Jonesboro Association, said she's gotten complaints from business owners about a smell that "comes and goes" from the Tenenbaum Recycling facility on Burke Avenue.
She said the plant is cleaning the insides of propane tanks using an odorant called mercaptan.
The gas is not dangerous and the plant is in compliance with the state, but the odor can be released during the recycling process.
Tony Davis owns Tony's Barber Shop, which is located just around the corner from the scrapyard.
He said some of his customers can't stand the smell.
"Some of my customers have to leave because they cannot stand the smell of it," Davis said. "The ones with emphysema or having a breathing problem, they actually have to leave. They get sick to their stomach."
Region 8 News was told all the tanks should be cleaned in the next few weeks.
There was a similar situation in Paragould recently, when the same odor alarmed residents.
The mercaptan being burnt off will not harm people, animals or plants.
