LAWRENCE COUNTY, AR (KAIT) - Lawrence County Judge Dale Freeman says the sheriff's department's proposed budget increase is actually a correction.
According Freeman, the budget proposal shows about a $300,000 increase in the sheriff's budget.
Freeman said there was a fault in the ticket fund that had the department thinking there was more money than there actually was.
The budget was reconfigured to correct the mistake and give the sheriff's department the correct amount of money they need to operate.
"When we did, it showed his budget was lot more last year than it actually was," Freeman said.
The budget proposal does award the department a few new funds to help hire one new deputy and purchase dashboard cameras for the patrol cars.
None of the budget money will not go to maintaining the new jail, since part of the new sales tax increase will go to maintenance.
Freeman said overall the budget for next year looks good.
"The budget is pretty well set, we are going to come out in good shape this year financially," Freeman said. "It is probably going to be the best year we have had in a while."
The final budget approval meeting will be Tuesday.
