Several feral cats reported in Jonesboro

JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - Feral cats seem to have returned to Jonesboro and the Jonesboro Police Department's Animal Control officers said Tuesday, there is nothing they can do.

Officer Mike Owens said they have received several calls from people asking them to pick up feral cats.

He said there is nothing they can do because there is no city ordinance against the cats and they simply do not have enough space for them.

There are certain conditions where animal control officers can pick up cats though.

They can respond if the cat is injured, it is in a business or it is stuck in a vehicle.

Owens said everyone should spay or neuter their cats to help prevent the problem from growing.

He said there may be residents who have good intentions in mind but are actually making the problem worse.

"More and more people that's feeding these cats and they are feeding them in what they call colonies," Owens said. "It'll get a whole bunch of cats together. The cats, if you start feeding them, they're going to find food. If people start feeding them it's just one after another after another and they just keep multiplying, multiplying, multiplying."

Owens said if a person has a feral cat issue they should call the humane society who will help if they can.
