JPD, ABC cracking down on alcohol sales to minors

JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) -

Recently several Region 8 businesses got busted for serving alcohol to minors. One of those restaurants, according to police, had two incidents in one night.

Two servers at TaMolly’s Mexican Restaurant, 2506 East Highland in Jonesboro, were caught selling alcohol to a minor on Thursday, Nov. 12, according to a Jonesboro police report.

The report stated an officer went with two 18-year-old women to the restaurant and placed drink orders.

After the servers brought alcoholic beverages to both teens, the officer contacted an Alcoholic Beverage Control enforcement agent Michael Bush who was waiting outside.

Bush came in the restaurant and issued the waiters citations for unknowingly serving a minor, the report stated.

For the infraction, the ABC board fined the restaurant $1,000 and placed it on one year’s probation.

Darrin Blue, manager of TaMolly’s, said in a written statement to Region 8 News:

Although we at TaMolly’s have policies and training procedures in place, in this instance a server, who DID follow procedure by asking for and checking the I.D. of the customer, did the math incorrectly and decided that the customer was of legal age.

TaMolly’s is a family-friendly restaurant and we take this matter very seriously.

Although it was not the intent of the server to provide alcohol to a minor, this mistake did cost this server his position.

TaMolly’s operated for over 20 years without serving alcohol and has only begun serving recently in markets where competition makes it necessary.

It is our intent to comply fully will all state and local laws with regard to this issue.

Paul Holmes, public information specialist for the Jonesboro Police Department, said they will continue to help ABC.

"The laws that govern the sale and use of alcohol exist for a reason,” Holmes said. “We like to assist the ABC when they need our help and obviously if we observe a violation or know about it we are going to take action.”

It was just one of several Region 8 businesses found in violation of their permits.
