KENNETT, MO (KAIT) - The holidays can be a difficult time for those who serve our country. Many spend the holidays away from family to protect our freedom, but one Region 8 mom is home for the holidays.
For students at Masterson Elementary in Kennett it was simply the last day of school before Christmas break, but for Zander Hobbs, it was much more.
Samantha Edge, Zander's mom, serves in the U.S. Army in South Carolina at Fort Jackson and has been away from home for 8 months.
Edge surprised him for his first grade Christmas party.
"I missed you," Edge said.
"I'm so happy," Zander said.
"You miss your family a lot, but you're surrounded by a lot of people that's going through the same thing, so they understand," Edge said.
Zander was still in shock even after realizing his mom was really home.
"So you get to be here the rest of December," Zander asked.
His mother responded with a very excited yes.
Zander wasted no time planning the rest of her stay.
"Tomorrow can you come to MeeMee's," Zander said. "I'm going to have another Christmas party there."
A mother of 2, Edge said coming home is the best gift she will receive this holiday season.
"It's a blessing to be able to come home and spend time with my kids," Edge said. "I've missed them a lot."
And from the look on Zander's face when she surprised him, the feeling is mutual.
"I love you," Zander said.
Edge is waiting for her security clearance to find out where she will be based next.
She will spend the rest of 2015 with her family in Kennett.
