Heavy rain floods Craighead County roads

CRAIGHEAD COUNTY, AR (KAIT) -

Heavy rain in Region 8 caused some roads to shut down due to flooding concerns Monday.

Monday morning, several streets and gravel roads in Craighead County were impassable.

Jonesboro E911 Director Jeff Presley said judging the depth of the water can be tricky.

“You don’t know what’s underneath that water,” Presley said. “A lot of times, especially on gravel roads and older roadways with pavement, you’re going to have a wash out under there. We suggest that you turn around, don’t drown.”

Presley said that saying holds true.

“It could be a danger,” Presley said. “It may take a couple of extra minutes to go a different route but sometimes that can save your life.”

It doesn’t take much for your vehicle to be swept away in rising waters. Presley said it only takes 6 to 8 inches to move a vehicle.

If you come across a flooded gravel road, Presley advised drivers to report the flooding to the E-911 center’s non-emergency number at (870) 935-5551.
