Clay County Sheriff's Department warns against phone scam

CLAY COUNTY, AR (KAIT) -

The Clay County Sheriff’s Department is warning residents about a phone scam that seems to be making its rounds in the area.

According to the sheriff department’s Facebook page, citizens have reported receiving calls from a 347 area with a recorded voice saying that the Internal Revenue Service has filed a lawsuit against them.

These calls are false.

The IRS website states that the agency will never call to demand immediate payment or call about taxes owed without mailing you a bill first.

They will also never demand you pay taxes without giving you the opportunity to question or appeal the amount they say you owe.

The IRS will not require you to use a specific payment method for taxes, like a prepaid debit card, or ask for credit or debit card numbers over the phone.

Lastly, they will not threaten to bring in local police or other law enforcement agencies to have you arrested for not paying.

The Clay County Sheriff’s Department wants to remind residents to never give personal information out over the phone.
