Cause of deadly shop fire in Monette released

MONETTE, AR (KAIT) - The Monette Fire Department has released the cause of a shop fire that killed one man early Sunday morning.

According to Fire Chief David Clark, a kerosene heater catching on fire started the blaze.

The investigation is now closed.

According to an incident report from the Craighead County Sheriff's Office states Marvin Riggs, 63, was found dead following the fire.

The sheriff's office was called to the 3300-block of Craighead County Road 531 just after 3 a.m. Sunday in reference to a fire near the home. The woman who alerted officers said someone might have been inside.

The woman, according to the report, also said she was awakened by a loud noise and noticed the shop behind her residence was "completely on fire."

Sgt. Dustin Norwood states that after firefighters made entry into the structure Riggs was found dead near the west wall of the building.

Investigators learned that Riggs used a "heater that was attached to a propane bottle, as well as an electric heater" to heat the building.

Riggs' body was sent to the Arkansas State Crime Lab for autopsy.
