Gas prices fall for the first week of 2016

JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - Average gas prices in Arkansas fell one cent per gallon in the last week, leaving it at $1.73 as of Sunday.

That is according to GasBuddy's daily survey of 1,826 gas outlets in the state.

The national average fell half a cent per gallon during that same time, averaging $1.99 per gallon.

Including the change in Arkansas during the past week, prices Sunday were 33 cents per gallon lower than on the same day in 2015 and 11.9 cents lower than one month ago.

"Talk about starting the New Year off right," Patrick DeHaan, GasBuddy's senior petroleum analyst, said. "The national average at $1.99 is a great way to begin 2016, and over twenty cents lower than where we started 2015."

DeHaan said we could see even more price drops before a rise that will likely begin close to Spring.

"For any Americans that made resolutions to try and spend less at the pump this year, I think they will be in good shape to achieve that," he said.
