JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - Careless driving landed a Jonesboro couple in jail on multiple felony charges, including drug trafficking.
On Jan. 1, Arkansas State Police Trooper Asa Ladd reported seeing a tan GMC Yukon traveling at a high rate of speed on West Matthews near Gee Street.
At one point, according to court documents, Ladd stated the SUV "passed another vehicle by veering into the grass to the right" and ran a stop sign.
When Ladd stopped the SUV he learned the driver and passenger, Eugene Howard and Katelynn Bragg, had prior felony convictions.
While interviewing Bragg, the trooper alleged the 21-year-old woman told him Howard had a gun in their vehicle.
When Ladd searched the vehicle, he reported finding a gun with two rounds in the magazine stashed between the seat and console.
A further search of the Yukon reportedly revealed 2.6 grams of suspected methamphetamine divided into 5 small plastic bags in a zippered pouch under the center console.
Ladd arrested both suspects on suspicion of possession of a Schedule I/II (meth or cocaine) controlled substance with the purpose to deliver greater than 2 grams but less than 10 grams.
Howard was also charged with simultaneous possession of drugs and a firearm, possession of a firearm by certain persons and careless/prohibited driving.
On Monday, the pair appeared together before Craighead County District Court Judge Keith Blackman who found probable cause to charge them with the above-listed offenses.
Howard is being held at the Craighead County Detention Center in lieu of $20,000 bond. Blackman set Bragg's bond at $25,000.
He scheduled both to appear in circuit court on Feb. 26 at 8:30 a.m.
