Powerball jackpot craze keeps Region 8 gas stations busy

BROOKLAND, AR (KAIT) -

People in Region 8 were filling up local gas stations hoping to get a piece of the $500 million dollar Powerball jackpot that is up for grabs in Wednesday night’s drawing.

An employee of the Jordan’s Kwik-Stop in Brookland said customers came in non-stop.

I came in at 6 a.m. this morning and I’ve sold about 40-50 tickets already,” Angie Wilson said. “Everybody really wants it. It’s been really crazy and this is as busy as its been for the jackpot.”

The Powerball bug has indeed hit Arkansas.

According to the Arkansas Scholarship Lottery, Powerball sales during this jackpot run (Nov. 5, 2015 through Jan. 5, 2016) was over $5.5 million. Powerball sales for the current week are over $667,000 with $431,000 coming from sales on Tuesday alone.

ASL states that this jackpot run has raised scholarship funding to over $2.7 million.

Back in Brookland, a customer at the store said he bought 3 tickets and had big plans if he won the jackpot.

My little girl has a rare genetic disease,” Jamie Westmoreland said. “Hopefully I’ll be donating money to help fund a foundation for a cure. It would be a miracle so it would be a blessing.”

Westmoreland’s said his daughter has cystinosis which causes cysteine crystals to form all over her body.
