JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - The Jonesboro Metropolitan Area Planning Commission approved the final site plan for new off-campus student housing on Johnson Avenue.
The approval did come with stipulations though.
The land was rezoned last year from residential to multi-family. Plans are to place up to 240 units along Johnson Avenue strictly for students and faculty at Arkansas State University.
At their meeting Tuesday, commissioners wanted to make sure that safety is a top priority in this project.
Because the housing will be located off-campus, yet still within walking distance, commissioners questioned site engineers on plans for a crosswalk.
"We've hired a traffic consultant to do a traffic study and to also look at the signalization in combination with the crosswalk," Barret Hagen with Hagen Engineering said. "They're waiting for the students to get back before initiating that study to make sure that we had accurate data."
Since Johnson Avenue is a state highway, developers will have to work with the Arkansas State Highway and Transportation Department on putting the crosswalk in.
