RANDOLPH COUNTY, AR (KAIT) -

Randolph County authorities arrested a man on negligent homicide charges late Thursday night.

Randolph County Sheriff Gary Tribble told Region 8 News that the charges against Bruce Stevens, 23, of Poplar Bluff stem from an investigation into a fatal crash worked by the Arkansas State Police.

According to the crash summary from ASP, the crash happened Feb. 9, 2015 just after 8 p.m. It happened on Highway 304, east of Pocahontas.

The report states that Jim Austin, 80, of Peach Orchard was killed when the car Stevens was driving crossed the center line and hit him head on.

Austin was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to a case summary, a paramedic drew Stevens blood at the scene. He was then flown to the Elvis Presley Trauma Center in Memphis for treatment of his injuries.

Stevens blood sample was sent to the Arkansas State Crime Lab for analysis.

The ASCL report showed the the following substances found in Stevens blood: benzodiazepines, cannabinoids, nordiazepam and diazepam. The report also showed that Stevens had a blood alcohol content of .082%.

The report states a passenger riding with Stevens told the trooper working the wreck that Stevens had crossed the center line several times prior to the accident and that she had to tell him where the curves in the road were.

An arrest warrant was issued for Stevens on Jan. 7 by Prosecuting Attorney Henry Boyce. Deputies picked him up in Corning Thursday night without incident.
