Walnut Ridge Street Dept. spreads sand mixture by hand

LAWRENCE COUNTY, AR (KAIT) -

The Walnut Ridge Street Department was out preparing roads ahead of the winter system that’s expected to hit Region 8 overnight Thursday.

Foreman Shannon Fisher said the city has 2 snow plows and a sand spreader, but crews were also out spreading sand by hand today because one of the plows was in the shop.

“We are trying to get salt and sand on all of our intersections and railroad tracks,” Shannon Fisher said. “We’ve had a lot of bad weather over the past few years and we’re trying to better prepare ourselves and our town for when that happens.”

Laying sand by hand is nothing new for the street department. Fisher said that’s how they used to get the job done before getting the snow plows.

It’s a slower method but it gets the job done, he said.

“What we could do with a spreader in an hour, it takes us about 5 or 6 hours,” Fisher said.

Fisher said the city has another plow a Jonesboro business donated to them that he hopes to have up and ready next winter.
