St. Louis Cardinals Manager Mike Matheny spoke at Crowley's Ridge College's Thursday night.
Matheny was there as part of the Reaching your Dreams Scholarship Fundraiser.
He spoke about the intangibles he looks for in players which include bringing energy and being selfless.
Matheny said he learned from Tony La Russa that the key in life is learning something new every day.
Matheny said he's happy with the support the Cardinals receive in Northeast Arkansas.
"It's always pretty humbling to watch how far Cardinal baseball reaches. To be able to spend some time hearing stories just generations of people who listening to Harry Carey and Jack Buck on down to Mike Shannon. And now watching our club now," Matheny said.
He also took the time to address the upcoming Cardinals season and the changes with the team.
"We have a lot of the same players. You have two key components that are going to be out in the fact of John Lackey and a Jason Heyward and also a Jon Jay who has moved, but for the most part we're looking at Adam Wainwright being back. We picked up a couple of other good players. I think we strenghtened our bullpen. I think we have a little more depth on our bench. We're just going to need some young players to step up," Matheny said.
Crowley's Ridge College expects this to be one of its largest fundraisers ever and will go a long way towards providing scholarships for its students.
