Lost circuit switcher blamed for outages in part of Region 8

MISSISSIPPI COUNTY, AR (KAIT) - Entergy Arkansas crews worked all night and day in the hardest hit area in Region 8 to restore power that was knocked out overnight by the winter storm.

According to Entergy mechanic Terry Edwards, the most affected area on Friday was their Blytheville network, including Manila, Leachville and several towns in eastern Craighead County.

Edwards said they lost a circuit switcher at the substation because of the bad weather.

Most residents experienced an 8-hour outage, some lasting even longer.

A Manila man explained the outage as "miserable," not so much for himself, but for his five young grandchildren who stayed with him and his wife Thursday night.

Larry McCallie said he did everything he could to keep his family warm.

"You try to do your best, but mother nature is going to do what it's going to do," McCallie said. "You just have to try to work with it. It doesn't work with you very well, especially in this cold weather but I did my best."

Most residents got their power back on by Friday evening, but that does not mean they are in the clear yet.

Edwards said more outages are possible because of the high winds.

"The weather part of it is pretty well out of here, but the ice is already here," Edwards said. "When you add the high wind something could tear down in the next five minutes with the wind blowing like it is."

Edwards said crews will be working through Friday night to restore the remaining outages.
