POPLAR BLUFF, MO (KAIT) - A man wanted by Poplar Bluff police was taken into custody in Kerrville, Texas Thursday.

Jeffery Matthew Vest, 31, of Broseley was wanted in Poplar Bluff for stealing a car and assaulting a police officer in late January.

According to police, officers attempted to arrest Vest for stealing when he sped off, leading police on a chase along city streets and county roads that lasted about 25 minutes. He tried to ram a Poplar Bluff police cruiser at one point, according to the news release.

Vest's vehicle eventually got stuck in a muddy field road and he took off on foot.

According to the news release, an officer broke his leg while chasing Vest. His broken leg required surgery.

At that time, police considered him a "dangerous individual" and said he may have been under the influence of methamphetamine.

When he was arrested in Texas, a stolen vehicle was recovered and two other people were also taken into custody.

Vest is being held in Texas on local charges and will eventually be extradited back to Butler County to face local felony warrants for assault on a law enforcement officer, resisting and stealing.
