Police: Woman fends off intruder with a hammer

JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) -

A Region 8 woman stopped a home intruder by hitting her over the head with a hammer.

The woman, who lives in the 900-block of French Street, told Jonesboro police Monday night she heard a knock at her door.

When she answered the door, she said 29-year-old Keshia Beck started yelling and tried to force her way inside the home.

To stop Beck from entering, the homeowner told police she grabbed a nearby hammer and hit Beck in the head with it.

The victim then locked the door and called 911.

The police report states Beck also broke out the front living room window.

Beck told police she was at the house looking for her husband.

The husband told officers he was at the house with his current girlfriend; but, he said he has been separated from his wife for almost a month.

Police also spoke with the victim’s children who said Beck was pushing on the door trying to get in the house.

Officers found blood splattered on the door about shoulder level, blood leading to the front window and blood leading out to the street.

Police say the blood pattern and evidence at the scene fit the victim’s statement.

Beck was taken to St. Bernards for treatment to her head wound and then taken into custody.

She was charged with assault in the second degree and criminal mischief.
