JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - The Jonesboro Fire Department honored two firefighters Tuesday night for their efforts to save two children during a house fire last year.
During the department's annual awards ceremony, Fire Chief Kevin Miller presented Driver Dustin Bellers and Captain Morgan Walling with Awards of Merit.
According to the fire department, Bellers and Walling rushed into a burning home in November 2015 and dove headfirst into a bedroom where a child was trapped.
Unfortunately, the child and his brother did not survive the fire.
Other members of the fire department were also recognized at the ceremony.
Miller awarded Carson Copeland as Firefighter of the Year and Captain Rickey Howton as Officer of the Year.
According to Interim Director of Communications Roy Ockert, Howton was chosen because of his "high level of selflessness and his duties and sound judgment at emergency scenes."
Miller also awarded Shirley Darby with the 2016 Commendation Award. Miller said Darby received the award because of her consistent work with the department's day-to-day operations.
