JONESBORO, AR (A-STATE) – Seniors Matt Burgess and Austin Baker of the Arkansas State baseball squad have been named Preseason All-Sun Belt Conference by College Sports Madness the online publication announced Thursday.
Burgess earned first-team accolades from CSM as one of five infielders, while Baker was one of three outfielders honored as a second-team selection.
A native of Greenbrier, Ark., Burgess enjoyed a successful 2015 campaign for the Red Wolves with a .257 batting average and .322 on-base percentage with 20 doubles, which was second most on the team and tied for second most in the Sun Belt Conference. He drove in the second most runs on the team (37) and hit three home runs to give him seven in his A-State career. The two-time letterwinner was first in the league with seven sacrifice flies, which put him ranked 20th in the country in that category.
Baker, one of only two players to start in all 57 contests a year ago, is coming off his strongest season at A-State in 2015 which saw him hit .290 with a team-best seven home runs. The Montesano, Wash., native scored the most runs on the team (42) and was third on the squad in doubles (14) and RBIs (36). He had the second highest slugging percentage on the team at .445 and third highest on-base percentage at .383. The three-year letterwinner also stole seven bases and had the best fielding percentage of the squad’s outfielders at .979.
