LAKE CITY, AR (KAIT) - A local veteran was honored in his hometown Wednesday while he celebrated his 95th birthday.
J. T. Tippy of Lake City served in World War II in the U.S. Army and was one of the few in his troop who survived.
Tippy turned 95 in January and Wednesday Lake City Mayor Jon Milligan awarded him an honorary tribute plaque to thank him for his military service and his outstanding involvement in the community.
Tippy told Region 8 News he was surprised about the party the town threw just for him.
"I didn't know a thing about this," Tippy said. "I appreciate everybody and everything they've done. I'm just a happy man."
Friends, family, and the community gathered at the courthouse to enjoy treats and stories with the 95-year-old hero.
