Governor Calls on Army to Grant Returning Guardsmen Additional Leave Time

LITTLE ROCK, AR - Governor Mike Huckabee yesterday called on the Army to grant returning Arkansas National Guardsmen an additional 15 days of leave time.

Huckabee and members of the state's congressional delegation appealed to the secretary of the Army for more leave time for the Arkansas National Guard's 39th Infantry Brigade.

The 4,200 soldiers in the brigade include about 3,000 Arkansans.  They were mobilized in October 2003 and went to Iraq beginning last March.  They were mobilized in October 2003 and went to Iraq beginning last month.  They have been trickling into Fort Sill, Oklahoma, for the last week.

Lieutenant Colonel John C. Edwards, a JAG officer for the 39th, said the additional leave is important to help soldiers transition back to life in America.
