A-State Men's Basketball Comes Up Short in Overtime Loss at ULM

A-State loses to ULM in OT

MONROE, LA (astateredwolves.com) – The Arkansas State University men's basketball team shot 47.5 percent from the field, but ULM hit 14 3-pointers to defeat A-State 78-73 in overtime inside Fant-Ewing Coliseum Saturday.

Anthony Livingston collected his 26th career double-double, first against ULM, with 23 points and 11 rebounds. Sean Gardner added 17 points while Frederic Dure (13) and Devin Carter (12) also reached double figures. Nouhoum Bocoum had eight points and 11 rebounds. Majok Deng had 27 points to lead the Warhawks and Justin Roberson added 21 points.

A-State trailed the first 18 minutes of the second half until Dure hit a game-tying 3-pointer with 2:02 left. The trey was part of a 9-0 run that saw the Red Wolves take a 67-65 lead with 1:22 remaining. The jumper by Livingston was the final bucket in regulation, but Gardner had a solid look off an out of bounds play in the final five seconds. The shot appeared to go in, but spun out giving ULM a chance to win with 3.9 seconds left.

The Warhawks got a good look from outside 3-point range, but the shot by Nick Coppola was off target sending A-State to overtime for the fourth time in conference play. Carter scored the first bucket in overtime on a jumper, but was 1-for-4 the remainder of the game and ULM went on to win 78-73.

ULM held A-State scoreless the first 4:52 of the second half and broke the 37-all halftime score to take a 46-39 advantage. The Red Wolves responded with a 12-2 run capped by a slam dunk by Gardner to tie the game at 49, but the Warhawks pulled away again to lead by eight with five seconds left.

The first half featured two big runs, but the game was tied at 37 by halftime. A-State led 15-12 with 13:28 left, but ULM grabbed an offensive rebound after two-straight missed free throws and hit a 3-pointer to spark a 9-0 run.

Livingston, who scored 10 points in the first half, ended a scoring drought of 4:43 for the Red Wolves and ULM led 21-17 with 8:19 left in the first half. The Warhawks went on a 12-3 run to hold a 37-26 lead with 3:12 left, but A-State ended the half on an 11-0 run to send it to the break knotted at 37.

Carter sparked the Red Wolves 11-0 run, scoring eight-straight points in a span of 1:08. He drained a pair of treys and added a jumper. Dure nailed the Red Wolves fourth trey of the half to knot the score at the half.

A-State finished the night shooting 47.5 percent (29-61) from the field while holding the Warhawks to 39.4 percent (26-66). ULM ended the night 14-for-36 (38.9 percent) from 3-point range while A-State was 7-for-19 (36.8 percent). The Red Wolves struggled at the charity stripe, finishing 61.5 percent (8-13) while the Warhawks were only 52.2 percent (12-23).

The Red Wolves return to action Thursday at Georgia Southern. Tipoff is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. in Statesboro, Ga.
