POCAHONTAS, AR (KAIT) - Crews with the Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department spent hours repairing part of the Black River Bridge in Pocahontas Monday.
Though one lane of northbound traffic was open, traffic was delayed for the better part of the day.
According to AHTD District 10 Engineer Walter McMillan, steel plates popped loose Monday morning causing there to be a large hole in the bridge.
McMillan said those plates cover a hole that crews opened up last year to drill down to the bottom of the Black River to determine where the rock base is for planning purposes of constructing the new bridge.
Bids for that project go out in March. When construction on that begins, traffic over the Black River will be rerouted solely to the southbound lane.
As for Monday, crews were able to open both lanes back up to traffic shortly after 4 p.m.
