CARAWAY, AR (KAIT) - The city of Caraway is looking to improve safety near one of the town's busiest highways after hearing from a concerned citizen.

According to Mayor Barry Riley, one neighbor asked the city to look at the traffic near the Dollar General on East State Street because many people walk in the area and there are no sidewalks.

He also said drivers can easily get distracted and they do not pay attention to the road.

Grace Waugh, who lives in Caraway, says she is mainly worried for the children.

"There are several kids here," Waugh said. "They have the tendency to not look left or right and they're liable to run across the road. Hopefully nothing ever happens but you never know."

Mayor Riley said he plans to contact the Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department and ask if they can investigate the area to see if they can get a reduced speed limit.

He said since it is a state highway, there is not much the city can do right now.
