An Osceola Neighborhood Cleans Itself Up

March 25, 2005 -- Posted at 6:53 p.m. CDT

Osceola, AR -- Residents in one Region 8 town came together to make their neighborhood a better place.

The Osceola community is trying to pull its self up by its' boot straps. Eastside residents were sick of looking at trash all around them. So, they invited their neighbors out to clean up.

About 50 people spent their Good Friday picking up trash. Volunteers came from everywhere to pitch in.

"Calvary Baptist Church came over on this side of the track to help us clean up our neighborhood,"said clean-up organizer Nedra Cook.

"This is what we're called to do as Christians. We're out here loving our neighbors helping the community, there's never any harm in that," said David Harshman of Calvary Baptist Church.

The work was hard and at times unpleasant but, residents say it was worth it.

"Now I can sit on my back porch and front porch and smell fresh air," said Lily Jackson.

Organizers hope their efforts will bring a fresh attitude to the east side.

"The future is neighborhood revitalization, we want new homes over in this neighborhood, programs and resources for the community.

Together the volunteer took about 15 truck loads of trash off the streets.
