JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - Plans for new apartments in downtown Jonesboro are moving forward.
The Jonesboro Metropolitan Area Planning Commission approved a conditional use permit for the old Massanelli's Cleaners & Laundry building on Union Avenue.
George Stem, CEO of Visions 2000, requested the permit to place 11 two-bedroom apartment units in that building.
The apartments will be located on the ground floor and upper level of the building.
The request now goes before the city council for approval.
If approved, Stem told Region 8 News they hope to have those apartments completed by the end of 2016.
Downtown Jonesboro may get some new apartments by the end of this year.
According to Visions 2000 and Construction Network Incorporated, they have applied for a conditional use permit that will be discussed at Tuesday's Metropolitan Area Planning Commission meeting.
The permit includes 11 two-bedroom apartment units to be located on Union Street in place of the Massanelli's Cleaners & Laundry building, located at 222 Union Street.
President George Stem said that this will not only be a great addition downtown, but it is something that Jonesboro needs.
"We just thought rather than build apartments where everybody else is why don't we just build them where people want them," Stem said. "I understand that two-bedroom apartments are in demand and there's just not enough of them so hopefully we'll fill some of that need."
Right now, Stem says he is working with Jim Little, an architect with Little and Associates, to come up with a theme.
Stem said the project, if approved by the MAPC, is expected to be completed by the end of 2016.
